How to pronounce words correctly with AI

Using AI to learn how to pronounce words correctly: what it does well, where it falls short, and a step-by-step method to fix a word you keep getting wrong.

AI is now good at two things that used to need a teacher: recognising which word you said, and explaining in plain language what to change. Combined with a slow audio model, that is enough to fix most words people misunderstand.

A 4-step method for a word you keep getting wrong

  1. Find the stressed syllable. Most long English words have one loud syllable: de-VEL-op-ment, par-TIC-u-lar-ly. Put the stress in the wrong place and people hear a different word even if every sound is right.
  2. Find the one sound that slips. Record the word in a sentence and look at what it was heard as. “Fird” for “third” means the th; “develop-MENT” means the stress.
  3. Do the mouth movement slowly. Follow the tip — tongue between the teeth, lips rounded, jaw dropped — at half speed, five times.
  4. Put it back into the sentence. Words change in sentences (linking, reduced vowels). Always finish by re-recording the full sentence.

When not to trust AI feedback

  • Names and rare words. Recognisers may “correct” a name to a common word. If only a name is flagged, check it with the person.
  • Noisy rooms. Background noise makes clear words look wrong. Re-record before you change anything.
  • Accents that are simply different. If the word was recognised correctly, it was understood. You don’t have to remove your accent.

Why respellings beat phonetic symbols for most people

Phonetic alphabets are precise but most adults never learned them. A respelling like “THUR-zday” plus a slow recording gets you 90% of the way, and you can use it straight away.
